Video Formats (MP4, WebM, AVI, MOV)
Video wallpapers are the most popular and resource-efficient option in Lively. The application uses MPV as its primary video backend, with VLC as a fallback, both supporting hardware-accelerated decoding through GPU APIs like DXVA2, D3D11VA, and NVDEC. This means even 4K video wallpapers can run at under 3% CPU usage on modern hardware. For the best compatibility and performance, use H.264 (AVC) encoded MP4 files at 1080p or 1440p resolution. VP9 encoded WebM files offer better compression ratios at the cost of slightly higher decode overhead on older hardware. AVI and MOV containers are supported but offer no advantage over MP4 for wallpaper use.
When preparing video wallpapers, aim for seamless loops. Use tools like FFmpeg to trim and re-encode clips so the last frame matches the first. A bitrate of 8-15 Mbps at 1080p provides excellent quality without excessive file sizes. For 4K content, 20-35 Mbps delivers clean results. Avoid variable frame rate sources as they can cause stuttering during loop transitions. Constant frame rate at 30 or 60 FPS is ideal for smooth desktop animation.
